Room Number Seven

The invitation reached each of them the same way: a small black card with the number seven in silver, and beneath it a single line: "The old neighborhood team.

The invitation reached each of them the same way: a small black card with the number seven in silver, and beneath it a single line: "The old neighborhood team. Thursday evening. Escape room on Rainbow Street. Don't be late."

None of them had seen each other in ten years. They had been five friends who once played football together in the same neighborhood, then scattered: Fadi the goalkeeper, Tareq the defender, Maher the midfielder, Rana — the only girl on the team — and Adam the striker. None of them knew who had sent the invitation, but all of them came.

They stood in front of a grey metal door marked with the number 7. Adam took a deep breath and said, "Which one of you arranged this?" They shook their heads. Then the door opened on its own.

The room looked like an old office. A wall clock pointing to sixty minutes, a wooden table, five chairs, and above the door a small screen that read: "To get out, speak the truth."

The door shut behind them with a muffled sound. The clock began counting down.

Maher said, looking around uneasily, "I don't like closed spaces." Adam laughed and patted his shoulder: "You'll get through it, like we always have." No one mentioned that Maher was breathing fast, and sweating despite the cold.

Rana said, "Fine. Another puzzle. Let's solve it and get out."

The first puzzle was a wooden box with a four-letter lock. Beneath it, a note: "A name only the five of you know." They tried many words: the neighborhood's name, the team's name, their coach's name. Nothing opened it. Then Fadi muttered, "Wall." Tareq laughed: "Of course! That's what we used to call the old goalkeeper." When Fadi typed the word, the box clicked open.

Inside lay an old folded note. Rana read it aloud:

"Fadi sold his father's ring to pay off a debt he never told anyone about."

A heavy silence fell. Everyone looked at Fadi, whose face had suddenly gone pale. He said angrily, "Who told you that?" Maher said, "No one. It's just a note." Fadi didn't believe him, and stood up shouting, "This isn't a puzzle! This is a trap!"

In the second puzzle, a question appeared on the screen: "Who left the decisive match injured and said nothing?" Alongside it, an old attendance log. Then a new note appeared, about Maher: "Maher hid his injury so he wouldn't lose his spot, then finished the season with a broken knee and walked away from everything."

Maher sat down on the floor. He said quietly, "And I never told you. Because I was afraid you'd think I was weak."

Half the time had passed. Secrets kept falling, one after another, and each of them began accusing the others. Tareq accused Rana, Rana accused Adam, and Adam threatened to smash the door. The air grew heavy, and voices rose.

Then suddenly all the lights went out.

Total darkness fell, broken only by the dim glow of the screen. Rana screamed. They heard a chair fall, then Maher's voice, gasping: "Open it! Open the door!" He rushed at the metal door, pounding it with both hands. Fadi tried to hold him back, and Tareq shouted, "Calm down! This is part of the game!"

Then a calm voice came from a hidden speaker in the ceiling — a man's voice none of them recognized at first: "I won't open the door until you stop accusing each other. The real betrayal isn't that a friend makes a mistake. The real betrayal is everyone staying silent about it until it becomes a wall."

The voice cut off. The lights slowly came back on.

Maher was sitting by the door, hugging his knees to his chest, trembling. Fadi sat beside him, and for the first time since they'd entered, he said nothing.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, the final puzzle appeared on the screen: a large five-digit combination lock, and beneath it a line: "Enter your shirt numbers in the order of your positions on the pitch, from goalkeeper to striker. But be careful: what's required is what you actually wore in the cup final — not what you think you remember."

Tareq said, "I wore number four, as a defender." But Rana said, "No, you wore six. We swapped shirts in the last season." They disagreed, and the discussion turned into sharp blame-trading: who had changed, who had switched, who had stayed and who had left.

Rana sat staring at the floor. She finally said, tired, "Enough. Do you know what's really connecting us through all of this? We didn't drift apart because of secrets. We drifted apart because we never talked. And every one of us hid something because we thought the others wouldn't understand."

Everyone stopped. Fadi looked down and said, "I didn't sell the ring because I needed money. I sold it because my father was sick and I didn't want him to know."

Tareq said, "And I lied to you when I said I wouldn't keep playing. I wanted to study engineering, and I was ashamed to say it."

One by one, they spoke. No one accused anyone anymore. And when they finished, they found the truth lighter than they'd imagined.

At that very moment, the screen above the door lit up again. A faded old photograph appeared: the whole team standing in a line after the neighborhood's last final, each with his number on his chest. Fadi looked up at it and said, "That's the day of the cup."

They gathered around the screen, reading the numbers one by one. Fadi, the goalkeeper: one. Tareq, the defender: six — Rana had been right, he'd worn Maher's shirt that day because someone had torn his own in training. Maher: seven. Rana, playmaker behind the striker: ten. And Adam, the spearhead: nine.

Maher said, "The order from goalkeeper to striker. So: one, six, seven, ten, nine."

Adam entered the numbers with a trembling hand: 1, 6, 7, 10, 9.

The lock clicked. The metal door slowly swung open.

Outside, a man was waiting for them. Seated in a simple wheelchair, thin, smiling, holding five cups of tea. After a long moment of silence, they recognized him: Zyad, the sixth friend, who had left the team ten years ago after a bitter falling-out with everyone.

Zyad said, "I designed this room. I'm flying out tomorrow for treatment abroad. I didn't want to go without us sitting around one table first."

Rana and Fadi ran to him, then the rest. No one said what they were thinking. But each of them realized that the hardest escape room hadn't been the one they'd just left. It had been the silent room they'd all been living in for ten years.
